A Fan's Review of the Twilight Saga: Eclipse

I just saw Eclipse about 7 hours ago. Here is my review for all you fangirls all over the world. I don’t think I need to remind you but *HERE BE SPOILERS* (You’ve been warned!) So, without further ado, here goes…

Let me start with THE TECHNICAL STUFF:

The CGI was brilliant. If you were impressed by the New Moon wolves, Eclipse won’t disappoint. The fight scenes were, as James says, “visually dynamic”.
Of the 3 movies, I would personally say that this one is the best to watch visually. The cinematography was excellent. Well, the color palette in Twilight focused on green and blue hues. New Moon, as you all may know, tended to the yellows and reds. Eclipse, in my opinion, was the perfect marriage between these two styles. But then, I observed that the colors were more of the darkish blue and gray. My favorite cinematographic scenes were the pan shots of the mountains. That one looked like a painting. Another would be Bella’s scenes in Florida, the one where she’s looking out into the waters. Another would be Edward sparkling while standing by the edge of the mountain.
The wigs were not as horrible as everyone thought. You could hardly notice that Kristen was wearing one (well, lest you stare at her forehead—which I may or may not have done!). And poor Jackson Rathbone! This franchise hasn’t been nice to him. (But then, his Texan accent does get a few points from me. While Jasper and Bella were talking to each other, I kept on being reminded by vampire Bill Compton on True Blood.)
Next up on the list is the makeup. I wasn’t that much of a fan. To me, it seemed like the people assigned to do that work were trying too much. Yes, the vampires looked… vampiric, out of this world, alien. I know that was the entire point. But then, if you ever see these people out on the streets, you’ll never think that they are human. Which, again, I know is the point exactly. But, at the very least, the vampires could have looked a bit more “of-this-world” and not that...synthetic. I think the makeup team had a bit of fun with the foundation. Just a bit too much fun. Summit should take notes from the True Blood vampires. (Okay, enough True Blood references at this point.)
The costumes were alright, in my honest opinion. A step in the right direction considering Edward’s wardrobe in New Moon. Although… I thought there were some scenes where Edward looked slightly lanky. In one scene (the part where they were training), Edward had on these baggy pants and I got annoyed by them. And then, there were the contact lenses. I had some qualms with them as well. Let’s just say they were very distracting. The color changes of the vampires’ eyes were very obvious (which was probably intentional—but this might confuse non-readers). That could have been more subtle. (But heck, I have no idea why I’m bothered by this.)

THE MUSIC:

I was truly truly disappointed by the LACK OF USAGE of the BRILLIANT soundtrack. The Beck and Bat for Lashes track doesn’t play in the part where we all think it would be. Well, basically, all the songs in the movie would start playing and, after about 10 seconds, that’s it. Done. And considering the epic usage of the soundtrack in New Moon (hello~~ need I remind you of Lykke Li’s Possibility??), they could have done better with this one. Which was why I thought the film’s editing was a bit rushed. But then, I don’t know. That was probably intended by the director as well. Since the atmosphere in New Moon was supposed to be sombre, the music was exploited to the highest degree to achieve that effect. Whereas… Eclipse was more action-filled, you see. The focus went to the dialogue and the scenes. Not quite on the music. Which, again, I thought was sad. I was expecting the Black Keys track to play when Leah was onscreen. And the Cee Lo Green track, I thought that would play out when Jacob runs away in the end. Didn’t happen! But still, the track that plays during the LEGHITCH scene does to it what Sigur Ros’Andvari did for Remember Me.
The score was okay. Howard Shore is talented but this movie is no Star Wars or Avatar. And quite frankly, I miss Carter Burwell’s score in Twilight. Call me nostalgic. Maybe that’s what I am.

THE ACTING AND WHATNOT:

The acting could have been a little better. There were a few moments which were quite cringe-worthy. But generally, this one was less embarrassing. Kudos to Kristen Stewart whose stuttering and lip-biting were considerably less this time. Rob did a lot better too but his acting still felt a tad bit… passive. The Tent scene is something to look forward to. He and Taylor did a GREAT job with that.
I loved the sweet parts between Alice and Jasper. Not too much but they managed to put those in.
I loved the Cullens being in their “true nature” during the fight scenes. Special mention goes to Esme. This time, it was refreshing not to think of her as JUST the mother. The woman kicked some serious ass!
Also, I loved how they added more of Riley and Victoria’s scenes in there. These parts were just “pre-supposed” by Bella in the book and I loved how they truly put these in film. If you were a non-reader, you would understand the story further. Although… they could have employed Cam Gigandet back. I would have wanted to see flashbacks with James and Victoria (played by Bryce Dallas Howard this time).
The other characters were okay. For her little part, Anna Kendrick proved to be effective. There weren’t much of Bella’s friends in the movie which I thought was good, actually. Quite frankly, I found Bella’s friends annoying scene-stealers in Twilight and New Moon. Billy Burke was still great as Charlie and Gil Birmingham was quite alright. But man, Booboo Stewart. With all of his mom’s pimping, you’d think he’d be very significant in the film. But the boy only appeared for at least 30 seconds! Ha!
I found the Volturi very comical. I wasn’t very impressed by their acting. Even Dakota’s. If you were a non-reader, you’d think, ”Why are they even there? What are they doing?”
I need to say this. Xavier Samuel’s “American” accent wasn’t very convincing. I could still hear a bit of Australian here and there. But there’s still plenty room for improvement.
And then there was Bree. (Confession: I haven’t read the book). She appeared numerous times. But since I haven’t read her book, I’m not sure if I could make an accurate approximation as of the moment.

MEMORABLE LINES:

There’s this scene where Bella and Charlie talk about the “birds and the bees” and Bella says at the end, “Yes dad, I’m a virgin!” But how Kristen said it, with both her thumbs up and all, it actually felt like Kristen talking! Not Bella. Expect the LTT girls UC and Moon to have a jest fest with that.
Well, Jacob and Edward’s lines in the tent scene. More on those later…
One line I found very awkward: when Jacob and Edward come between each other, Bella says, “From now on, I’m Switzerland!” But Kristen delivers that line all wrong. I don’t know. Something with her timing maybe.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

The FLASHBACKS

There was one for Rosalie and another for Jasper. Well, I don’t know if it’s just me, but Rosalie’s part in the BOOK seemed a bit hazy. I couldn’t visualize those very well. But the movie more than made up for that! In all honesty, Rosalie’s flashback was one of the more poignant parts of the film. If you didn’t feel any sympathy for her and the other vampires before, well this one was pretty moving. And then there was Jasper’s flashback. The first part looked like a Marlboro ad! Haha. Again with the Texan accent. I found that endearing. Also, I loved how they incorporated the training of Maria’s southern vampire army in the film because this was an important part in the book. It made me appreciate Jasper’s character a bit more.
I’m not sure if this counts as a flashback but a considerable amount of time was allotted to the Third Wife’s story. Thankfully, it wasn’t as long and complicated as that in the book. I appreciated how they employed real Indian actors (well, at least, I thought they were.) Although… I’m not sure if rabid fans would be very impressed by that scene. Let me just say this: if you really want to know the backstory of the Quileute wolves, then better stick to the description in the book.

The TENT SCENE

Now, I understand why Taylor describes this as his favorite scene. As I said, he and Rob did a very great job! For the first time, you could actually feel that Jacob and Edward were bonding. And then there was this EPIC part: Jacob says to Edward, “I can’t help it. I’M HOTTER THAN YOU.” The crowd in my theatre went crazy! And fortunately (or unfortunately—if you’re Team Jacob), Jacob’s “impure thoughts” weren’t visualized. Thank God. Edward then answers later on with, “You know, Jacob, if we weren’t mortal enemies, I would have liked you.”

BELLA AND JACOB'S KISS

I don’t know if I might lose my Team Edward badge with this one but I actually thought that Bella and Jacob’s kiss was more intimate and epic. The beautiful background made it more significant. And heck, they kissed on top that mountain for ages! David Slade allotted a considerable amount of film for that scene alone. But hey, it came out as sweet and not as annoying as I thought it would be. Well, just a little bit.

The FIGHT SCENES

Now if you were bringing your man over to watch with you, he WILL be satisfied with the fight scenes. The people in my theatre gasped and clapped right after. For real! I was impressed as well.

The LEG HITCH

Yes, the leg hitch was VERY OBVIOUS. No doubt David Slade was reading all of our tweets. Was it as epic as I thought it would be (well not just the leg hitching part but the entire *cough* bed scene *cough*)? YES. And what I TRULY LOVED was how the scene started with Claire de Lune playing at the background. Bringing that back was awesome. Although… (and quite sadly) this was a part where I thought THE BOOK DID BETTER. You remember that part in the book where Edward carries Bella from her car and kisses her all the way to the door? I was expecting that! But noooo~~ In fact, Edward starts out saying to Bella, “What were you doing outside?” Not very romantic! I don’t know about you guys but, to me, Rob and Kristen still need A LOT of work on their chemistry on screen. (I know! Robsten shippers, you can kill me now.) But alas, the entire scene ends with Edward saying, “Bella, believe me, I want to do it too but I’d like to marry you first.” (Awww…) And then THE PROPOSAL happens. You should just watch out for this part. (Hint: Audience members melted.)

IN CONCLUSION

If I were a legitimate film critic, I’d probably give the movie 2.5 or 3 stars out of 5. But since I’m a fangirl (I know. This spells utter embarrassment. There goes my street cred!), I’ll ease up and give Eclipse a 3.5.

Was the film true to the book? YES. VERY VERY TRUE. More like a carbon copy, actually. (Hint: It was a movie made for the fans.)
Was it a good adaptation? YES, just a bit lacking in some parts.
Was it the best out of the three films? In my opinion, YES!
Would you be able to bring your man to watch it and him actually like it in the end? YES.
Could it have been better? YES.
Will I watch it again? HELL YES!!! \(^_^)/

2010 Oscars: The Dresses, Winners and Upsets

I haven’t written a decent blog in ages so I guess it is only fitting to come back with a bang and write a reaction to the Oscars, which aired this morning.

Disclaimer: I am by no means a valid film critic or fashion reviewer. I just represent the many civilians around the world who love watching films and enjoy show business.

So, to get things going, I’m going to start off with the dresses worn by the beautiful actresses.

The Dresses

My personal favorite was this black accessorized gown worn by Carey Mulligan. Yes, I am aware that a lot of people are calling her the “next Audrey Hepburn”. Though I may not entirely agree with that concept, I feel as if she does deserve the accolade. In her acceptance speech, Sandra Bullock said something about Carey being so sweet, elegant and regal and that it “made her sick” (but Sandra meant it in jest, of course). Personally, I LOVE Carey Mulligan’s style and it doesn’t make me sick at all. I even love her current hairstyle, despite her own admission of being tired of it. Here’s to hoping we see more of her movies in the future!

My second favorite gown was, surprise surprise, Kristen Stewart’s! Even though a certain lot of people do not like her at all, I do. I love her style. I love her attitude. And she did win the recent Elle Style Award, didn’t she? Though she seems quite awkward and uncomfortable being around or in front many people, at least I can see that she’s real. I love her “Punk’s Not Dead” personality. In fact, her mess-of-a-presentation at the Oscars a while ago made me smirk a bit and cheer for her. Ya, I suppose she’s cute like that.

Everybody else was saying they loved Sandra Bullock’s dress but, for me, it was just meh. I don’t know. It just didn’t do anything to spark an interest in me. That embroidery at the top was okay though. Just okay. I just didn't like the asymmetry.

And what in the hell was going on with Zoe Saldana's dress? It was a mess! Did she forget that she was on Earth and not on Pandora anymore?

The Awards

*Actor in a Supporting Role – Cristoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds

Well, I haven’t actually seen Inglourious Basterds but I’ve been reading lots of positive reviews regarding Mr. Waltz’ portrayal. So congrats to him!

*Actor in a Leading Role – Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart

Again, I haven’t seen this movie but all I can say is that I loved Mr. Bridges’ acceptance speech. I thought it was adorable how he constantly thanked his parents while his emotions of joy and pride were thoroughly palpable. And have you seen his wife? Woah, what a beauty!

*Actress in a Supporting Role - Mo'Nique for Precious

Well, she had this coming, didn’t she? And what a clean sweep of the awards circuit too! The SAGs, Globes, BAFTAs, and even the Spirit Awards! Good for her. I have yet to watch Precious and I expect her to be good in that, considering she’s already won the Oscar.

*Actress in a Leading Role – Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side

Yes, I have seen this movie and thought that Sandra brought a very strong performance in it. But, did you notice how she asked, “Did I really earn this, or did I just wear y’all down?” during her acceptance speech? Haha, that really got me laughing inside. Personally, I was rooting for Carey Mulligan in this because I thought Carey’s performance in An Education was more regal and relatable but, anyways, Sandra Bullock did give the stronger performance. Huh. So, sorry Meryl Streep, err… better luck next time? Had Meryl Streep won, I would have greatly questioned the credibility of the Academy. Though I love her lots, I actually found her portrayal of Julia Child in Julie and Julia too comical and a bit annoying, really.

*Animated Feature Film and Original Score – Up

Gah! I just adore this movie. I may or may not have bawled like a little child when I watched the first ten minutes of this film. It was just beautiful. And what a highly-deserved crown for Original Score! I don’t think there has been a more poignant and brilliant scene in all of movie history as those silent four minutes with Carl and Ellie set to Michael Giacchino’s spellbinding musical score.

*Visual Effects – Avatar

This goes without saying.

*Writing (Adapted Screenplay) – Geoffrey Fletcher for Precious

What an upset! Like many others, I was truly expecting Jason Reitman to win for Up in the Air. But more on that later.

*Directing – Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker

Like Barbra Streisand said, “it is about time”. What a way to ring in International Women’s Day with the first Oscar win by a woman in this quite male-exclusive category. And by the way, didn’t any of you find it also interesting that Barbra Streisand showed up to present the award? Was this the Academy’s way of making up for their snubbing of her amazing directorial take in Yentl? Haha.

*Picture – The Hurt Locker

I couldn’t decide if The Hurt Locker or Avatar was the underdog for this category. Indeed, Avatar was an experience and a moving one at that. But, like I read on Time Magazine, I didn’t think the Academy members were keen on giving the award to a movie which degraded the image of American soldiers. And besides, weren’t everybody pointing out how Avatar just recycled the plot of Pocahontas? Yes, I think it would have been the Academy’s loss of credibility had they opted for Avatar. It’s not all about the 3D, you know, James Cameron. At the end of the day, it has to boil down to originality and terrific storytelling.

What an Upset for Up in the Air

I was truly cheering for this film because its story was relevant and the acting was just superb. At the end of the night, it took home no award at all. In the acting category, George Clooney lost to Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) while, in the adapted screenplay category, Jason Reitman lost to Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious). Neither Anna Kendrick nor Vera Farmiga took home the supporting actress trophy.

I thought George Clooney was amazing in Up in the Air. In fact, Jason Reitman mentioned that he wrote the part for Mr. Clooney and I couldn’t agree more with his decision. Truly, I couldn’t picture anybody else playing that role. But on the other hand, it also felt to me like George Clooney was actually just playing himself. So, did the Academy members think that it didn’t take much acting on George’s part? I don’t know. Maybe.

About Jason Reitman losing to Geoffrey Fletcher, I’m still in shock. Everyone was expecting him to win this award (and I mean everyone). Oh well, it seems like people really do love Cinderella stories, don’t they? And who is to deny Oprah of bragging rights for Precious?

So, in conclusion, a BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME to the losers (ehem, James Cameron, ehem) and a huge CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!

And also, if you’re a guy and you’re name is NOT Tom Ford or Keanu Reeves, please do the world a favor and shave off that awful beard.

Senators Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas Visited the Ateneo de Davao University Today

Earlier this afternoon, Senators Mar Roxas and Noynoy Aquino went to the Ateneo de Davao University for a mini forum/meet and greet with the students and faculty. It was my first time seeing Senator Roxas and second time meeting Senator Noynoy. And even though I am not a student of the Ateneo anymore, I still went there in full yellow shirt regalia to show my support for the tandem. (Thank God for my Blue Knight alumni card, I can now go in and out of the campus with no hassles!)

A lot of students turned up for the event despite the gloomy weather. Towards the end of the forum, the rain really started pouring and this did not help with the audio at all. Senator Noynoy has a very soft and delicate voice to begin with and I really thought it was regretful that I could not hear certain important parts of his speech. Luckily, Senator Roxas more than made up for it. Of the two, I guess Senator Roxas indeed has more training and experience when it comes to public appearances.

Anyways, at the end of the event, I was courageous/silly enough to make my way through the crowd and have a photo op with both senators. Both were truly gracious despite their obvious fatigue and stress. Senator Noynoy expressed that they have been out and about since 4 AM. Unfortunately, my picture with Senator Noynoy is quite blurry, to which he actually asked me "O bat ka nanginginig?" LOL. Perhaps, I was just a bit too speechless and nervous when I took the picture. The one with Senator Roxas is no good either. Boo. Better luck next time, I hope.

Anyways, let me just post some snippets from the forum, including the questions of the students and faculty and the two senators' answers. During the forum, by the way, I was at the back and, unfortunately, I really could not hear some of the answers. It was raining as well. So, I hope that what I write here grasps the context of what the two senators wanted to convey.

Question # 1 (by Sir Don Pagusara): What is your vision of the Philippine nation?

Senator Mar Roxas said that both he and Senator Noynoy were lucky enough to have grown up with a more privileged life. Through his travels nationwide, he knows that what the majority of Filipinos face is the exact opposite of the life they have known. He says he envisions a country where the government can actually contribute to the betterment of Filipinos, unlike the current government of Pres. Arroyo. He wants the government to be active and transparent when it comes to its relations with the people.

Senator Noynoy envisions a country where basic education is given priority above all else. He expressed his dismay at the incompetence of the current public educational system, where the learnings of students are compressed into a shorter duration compared to other nations. He says he really wants to change this so that young Filipinos can use their education in the pursuit of a better future.

Question # 2 (by a Pol Sci student): What can you contribute to the youth?

Both of the senators focused on the empowerment of the youth and their education. (Unfortunately, I could not hear their answers to this question very well.)

Question # 3 (by another Pol Sci student): To Senator Noynoy: Senator Roxas conceded his bid for the presidency to let you run. What is your edge over him? As a member of the Aquino family, you already enjoy popularity but what Filipinos need is service. How can you serve the Filipino people?

Senator Noynoy said something about how difficult it was to answer this particular question. (And then he explained something but the audio was really terrible at this point.) Luckily, Senator Roxas took hold of the microphone and said, "It is really difficult for Noy to answer that because he is just too humble. I gave up my bid for the presidency wholeheartedly because I have so much belief and faith in Noy. I believe that he can truly change our nation if he becomes president. His record is untainted and no controversies are linked to his name. He is a very good public servant. I can vouch for his humility because even if he is an Aquino, he still remains to be very soft-spoken and good to the people. As a former member of the nation's first family, he could have become a hard-headed citizen but he never allowed his social stature to blind him with power."

Question # 4 (by a Pol Sci faculty member): To Senator Noynoy: You are generally considered to be a devout follower of the Catholic faith but your support for the Reproductive Health bill has somehow tainted your relationship with the church. Are you willing to turn your back on the RH bill to please the church?

Senator Noynoy's response was something along these lines: "I think it is wrong to say that I am 'turning my back' on the RH bill. In the first place, I am a co-author of said bill. The thing is, I understand that different sectors have their own obligations. As a senator, it is my obligation to recognize the people's needs. The church has their own obligation of teaching the public as well. There are certain issues that only the RH bill can solve but this does not mean that I am turning my back on the church as well to fulfill this process. First of all, people have to understand what the RH bill stands for."

My Reaction to Manoling Morato's Crap

I was so irked by this political ad/commentary that Manoling Morato released in the Inquirer yesterday. The title of said “article” is “Forgiveness is a gift” (but I have yet to locate a transcription). At first, I thought he was going to talk about genuine reconciliation, that he was finally going to own up to his lack of wise judgment in particular issues (as in the National Artist Awards rift) or such. But noooo, he had to release this utterly useless and hate-filled propaganda against President Cory and the Aquinos! I was so disturbed and offended that I wanted to rip the paper to shreds whilst I was reading!

In that stupid excuse for a political ad, Morato says that he has learned to abhor the Laban sign and the yellow ribbons [for Cory] because "they symbolize disunity, divisiveness, anger and hatred”, hinting that Filipinos who sport the yellow symbolism are bigots who think that they are the only ones who are allowed to make commentaries on democracy and as some sort of snobbish people who think that they are the only ones who are right in all affairs of the country. He also compared this brand of hatred (spawned through the usage of Cory symbolisms) as similar to the Nazis’ hatred to the Jews (Can you believe it? He called us—he called me—a Nazi! To hell with him!). He then lambasted the symbolisms even further and advised Filipinos to stop using or wearing yellow in whatever political way (as if he is some sort of expert on the Filipino psyche!). If he had problems with the people using the symbolisms for their own gain, then he should have named and reprimanded them and not attacked the symbols themselves!

In the article, he also says that he pities GMA because of all the flack she has received throughout her presidency, that perhaps some people are zeroing in on GMA so that the anti-GMA sentiment can propel them to receive national sympathy, and thus, support in the form of votes in 2010. Morato goes on saying and implies that we should probably check ourselves and start pitying GMA too (or something to that drift). Bullcrap! GMA is receiving all this ire out of her own doing! She is one conniving, murderous, corrupt and evil biotch of a president and she does not deserve pity from Filipinos in this lifetime or the next! Heck, Manoling Morato, what say you of the “Hello Garci” controversy, of the overpriced Macapagal Road project, of the ZTE-NBN Scandal, of the thousands of extra-judicial killings of political activists and media personnel, of the outrageous dinners in the US, of the expensive beach properties of her children in the US? Dang, this dude is smoking some crack joint that seems to be more lethal than what killed Michael Jackson!

And, as if the things he said above aren’t enough, he also mentions that he was offended by the Aquino family because of their refusal to invite GMA to the burial of Cory, their refusal to hold a state funeral for Cory, and, lastly, their refusal of Malacanang’s suggestion to create a Cory monument in Rizal Park. Oh, excuse me, Mr. Morato, but what the Aquino family did was right! By not inviting GMA in Cory’s funeral and not receiving her offer of a state funeral and whatever other offers there were, they effectively got rid of an attention-seeking leech who would have probably done something to put the focus on her and bask in the limelight during that national time of bereavement. And, who are you to dictate what the Aquino family should or should not do?! Haven’t they given us enough of their parents already? Come to think of it, they had all the right to enjoy a private memorial of their beloved mother (who has suffered so much in recent years) but they still shared her with all of us! That is the humility that deserves genuine attention and not these reeking and questionable offers of false truce.

Oh no, I’m not yet done. In the same article, Morato also alleges that Cory called everyone who supports Charter Change as “mga walanghiya”. And he quotes so with such disdain and disrespect for the dead! Damn it, a national paper is not the avenue to attack the dearly departed! Even if Morato supports Cha-Cha himself, he should go to the proper forum and express the reasons why he does. He does not need to tell us his scorn of the people who don’t! And alleging something so negative about our President Cory, of the saintly and motherly Tita Cory (who can’t ever be caught with those words, I am certain), Morato just went so low!

Through this stupid ad, I was really offended. I have never been offended like this before. Morato just spit out crap that does not even deserve to be published. Through his words, was Manoling Morato saying that the majority of Filipinos who flocked to give the most respectful send-off to Cory, who tied yellow ribbons in their cars, homes and establishments, who flashed the Laban sign left and right, who gave their utmost gratitude to the symbol of democracy as people who symbolize disunity? Did he not watch the coverage that day? Was he not at all awed by the very obvious display of unity not seen since 1983? And now he calls the Cory symbolisms, the Laban sign and the yellow ribbons as ways to divide Filipinos! Bah, this is blasphemy in its very core! Manoling Morato should be banned for disrespecting President Cory! He should be banned for blaspheming the collective Filipino symbol for democracy and hope!

When I watched the news last night, I was expecting some form of reaction to Morato’s ad yesterday but…to no avail. I pondered on this. Why would the media pass a chance to criticize a blasphemous person? Then I realized, maybe, I should even praise the media for this because, honestly, Morato’s work doesn’t deserve to be recognized—in other words, hindi na dapat pinapansin—and maybe this blog should not even take heed to it as well (but I wrote it anyway). He talks of uniting the people but what he has done is to further our disunity.

Manoling Morato is a bane to the society and he does not deserve my attention—or yours.

Tennis and Melanie Oudin

Not a lot of my friends know that I actually enjoy watching tennis a lot. Only my closest friends and my immediate family are aware of this. I started being a tennis aficionado in the late 90s (when our TV was just installed with a cable connection). That time, I could only scream for one person and that was Pete Sampras. On the women’s side, of course, there were the Williams sisters (who continue to dominate until today), Lindsay Davenport (who has since retired) and Martina Hingis (who was banned when she was caught with cocaine during the 2007 Wimbledon tournament).

But now, the playing field has widely increased. The early 2000s saw the rise of Roger Federer (*swoon*), Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Marat Safin. The ladies who gained fame during this period were Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Ana Kournikova and basically all those other fiery Russians. Of late, the tennis scene has expanded to welcome more amateur-turned-pro players. These are Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and, of course, Rafael Nadal. The ladies who fit this description are Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina, Jelena Jankovic and Elena Dementieva.

But anyways, I digress.

Recently, one lady (or shall I say female adolescent?) has received the attention of the tennis universe. She has caught the world by storm through her whirlwind rise to fame. I am talking about 17-year old American and Georgia native Melanie Oudin.

In this year’s US Open (currently held at Flushing Meadows, New York), the teenager has elevated her status by beating three seeded players in the various elimination rounds. In her journey towards the quarterfinals (where she has now become part of the top 8), she has beaten Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and Nadia Petrova. All of these, she has done through the aid of her pink and yellow Adidas rubber shoes, with a personal note printed on the bottom which says “Believe”. Indeed, she has not only shown her belief in herself but she has made others believe in her.

Now, this is the beauty of tennis that has attracted me all the more to it. As much as tennis is a physical and tactic-driven sport, there are times when it just turns into a game of spirit. Most of the time, it’s a players emotional disposition that can either be her winning or losing ticket in a match. When a player is thrust into that public stage with at least 15,000 spectators and with everything that is happening on court, it is so difficult to keep one’s composure. In many ways, this is very similar to an actor’s stage fright.

But then, Melanie Oudin, bless her young and courageous soul, has overcome all of that. Young in years she might be, with opponents who are ten or so years her senior and with even more experience, but there she is, enlivening the crowd who, in the background, can only shout, “Go Melanie! Believe!”

Melanie Oudin, if you are reading this, I am rooting for you. And even then if you don’t get through the semis or finals, I will continue to applaud your bravery, intelligence and ability to act beyond your years. Believe!

Kim Bap is a type of Korean food that is similar to the Japanese 'maki'. Basically, it is a combination of different types of food rolled into 'kim' or seaweed. What's inside it are rice (with sesame oil and salt), ham (the spicy kind), tempura (sauted with soy sauce and a little bit of sugar), carrots (sauted in sesame oil and salt), scrambled eggs, cucumber and raddish (a special marinated kind that can be bought in Korean stores).

I think being around Koreans has really rubbed off on me. Haha. I hope you enjoyed the pictures! Yum yum day. Yum yum!

Senator Mar Roxas, the man in blue, the sacrificial lamb?

The announcement of Senator Mar Roxas that he will gladly abandon his hopes for the presidency to support the candidacy of Senator Noynoy Aquino came as a shock to everyone. Well, I guess it was a very bold move on his part.

I have to admit, I was one of those people who had qualms about him and his running for the presidency. Yes, Senator Mar Roxas is touted to be a good counterpart to Manny Villar. Yes, to this day, he sort of has a better record compared to other politicians. Yes, he is about to marry one of the most admired women in the Philippines. Yes, he is considered to be generally “okay” by most people. But then, I was really turned off by his early campaigning. And to think that his campaign ads portray him as some sort of hypocrite (a very rich Araneta-Roxas offspring driving the ‘padyak’, oh please!) did not help either. He just seems too good to be true, too “goody-two-shoes” (well, save for that one incident of badmouthing in a rally) to be taken seriously.

Nonetheless, this recent move of his actually changed my perspective about him. He seems to be one good dude, I guess. “Somebody has to make a sacrifice for the country. Ako na,” he says. Well, you’ve got to admire him for that. Not a lot of ambitious presidentiables (Manny, ehem, Villar, ehem..) have the balls to do what he did.

But, here’s the thing. What if Noynoy Aquino suddenly declares that he doesn’t want to run for the presidency anyway?! What then?! Could we probably think that Senator Roxas did this just so that people will actually admire him now, way before Senator Aquino makes his decision? So that when Senator Aquino says, “No, I won’t run”, people will have already had this very nice perspective of Senator Roxas to actually consider voting for him in 2010? I don’t know. This is just my own conspiracy theory.

But anyways, let me talk about the possible candidacy of Senator Noynoy. We are all aware that he won’t make that decision until the 40-day mourning period allotted for his mother is over. But, as vice president of the Liberal Party, Mr. Butch Abad, said, we are getting there. However, even now, I have heard many people already expressing their doubts about Senator Noynoy. That annoying spokesperson of Malacanang says that this sudden interest for Noynoy just has a lot to do with Cory’s recent passing and we can’t assume that what the people feel now will still be similar come election time. (Well, to hell with him.) Other people are also saying that Senator Aquino is just using the reputation of his parents to advance his political career. Others also believe that genetics doesn’t have anything to do with the inheritance of good governance. And as Senator Dick Gordon says, legislators don’t make good executives anyway.

Oh, damn them. Damn all the haters. To you, I say these:

Senator Noynoy is seen to be the darkhorse and the best candidate for the opposition because he never really intended to be in power. Unlike the hilariously ambitious candidates, he is actually considering this because people have urged him to do it. Not him, but the Filipino people. For him, this is definitely a huge burden to carry and decision to make. He is doing this for us, people! And not for his own personal or political gain.
If you check Senator Noynoy’s SALN, you will discover that his net worth is not even that much (as opposed to those Arroyo kids, grrr!). It is obvious that he has never been considered corrupt, just like his mother. In fact, he is the only child of Cory who lived with her because he couldn’t afford to purchase a home of his own. Even Kris Aquino says that one primary concern of their family about his running is his lack of financial resources. From these, we can deduce that Senator Aquino may very well be the uncorrupt leader we have been waiting for.
We cannot doubt that Senator Aquino is the son of Ninoy and Cory, the great and untainted Ninoy and Cory. Do you really think that he will do anything unreasonable to spoil the stain-free image and memory of his parents? I really don’t think so. I believe he has much respect for them and he will truly do his best to act in the best possible way once he becomes president. We ought to believe this too.
Senator Noynoy Aquino is the only one who can unite the opposition. Not Villar. Not Escudero. And certainly not Erap! The opposition can have one true voice through Noynoy. Panlilio has said that he will most definitely abandon his ambitions for presidency if Noynoy runs. Even Erap has stated something similar. Indeed, Noynoy is the only one who can truly represent the face of good against evil. He is Rizal to the Spaniards, Ghandi to the British, Ninoy to Marcos, Cory to Marcos, Obama to Bush and as Conrado de Quiros said, Luke Skywalker to the Empire. He is our only hope! The only one who can use The Force!

If Senator Aquino runs for president, we can expect a non-traditional campaign (no annoying ads and jingles, I hope!). For one thing, he does not have enough resources for the traditional kind. And another, he has not had enough time to plan for this. But if we can all unite to support him and save our country, let us all please do. I am speaking to the youth, foremost. Let us all unite and use our current weapons! Twitter! Facebook! Multiply! Blogs! Let us all do our best to win this fight!

P.S. Last year, Senator Noynoy went to our university to deliver a speech. I was sitting a little over a meter from him. At that time, I never thought that I would be facing the future president of the republic. I should have taken a photo with him. Regrets, regrets. Hahaha.

P.P.S. Today, I wore yellow. Senator Noynoy went to Davao this morning and I was hoping for him to see me showing my support. Hahaha.
